In making this cocktail you will be pleased to know that there are only three main ingredients. 50% of this drink is tequila, 30% is an orange flavoured liquor, and the rest is fresh lime juice.
To be fair orange flavoured liquor can cover many drinks. Different varieties of these have been used successfully. So what we will do is point out a few of the variations you can use without stipulating exactly which one it should be. The choice is yours and just use your favourite one.
Some people use Triple Sec, in Mexico Patron Citronge is preferred, others favour Cointreau. For a blue Margarita you can substitute blue Curacao.
If you really want to push the boat out then you could use Grande Marnier or Gran Gala. But if you are going to use premium grade orange liqueurs here you might want to buy premium tequila to go along with it.
For our example we will use Cointreau. You may use whichever you have in the drinks cabinet and simply substitute the same amounts.
For the authentic margarita fresh lime juice is an essential ingredient. Key limes from Mexico offer a more bitter taste than the Persian limes which our more common in the United States.
Depending on the amount of the cocktail you want pour 50% tequila into a cocktail shaker and add ice. To this add 30% Cointreau, and then 20% of fresh lime juice. Shake this mixture well for 30 seconds.
- Dampen the rim of a margarita glass and then dip it in salt to get the famous crusty edge.
- Fill the glass with shaved ice, and carefully pour the cocktail over it.
- If you can’t find shaved ice then crushed ice is almost as good.
If all the above seems like too much fuss then you may want to take a look at this margarita maker. It’s simple to use and makes far more than just margaritas.
